DJK Solicitors in Waltham Abbey is a small firm run by two partners Debra King a solicitor who was admitted in October 1983 and Leonie Adams a Legal Executive who qualified as a Fellow in 2007.
Debra (known as Debbie) was trained at Broxbourne Council and following qualification worked at Waverley District Council in Surrey, specialising in Litigation and Town & Country Planning matters, including representing the Council at numerous Public Enquiries and Appeals and attendances at the Magistrates Court and County Courts.
In 1984/5 Debbie returned, at the Borough Solicitors request, to work as a Senior Solicitor at Broxbourne Council for a period of two plus years, dealing with all aspects of the legal work of the Council, but specialising in Planning, Housing and Health and Conveyancing. After the Borough Solicitor left to go into private practice as a partner at a large London firm, Debbie too decided that wider experience was called for.
In 1987, Debbie moved into private practice with a large London firm as an assistant solicitor in the Commercial Property Department. During this time she worked on conveyancing matters mainly for property developers (large and small) and also on compliance reports in respect of commercial takeover transactions. This work included purchasing very large and small sites for redevelopment for housing or commercial usage, negotiating and preparing planning benefit agreements and preparation of all documents for subsequent plot or unit sales, and dealing with commercial property leases and general planning advice.
After three years, Debbie obtained a post with a smaller three-partner firm, working with the Property Partner. Initially in addition to the Residential and Commercial Property work, Debbie also assisted one of the litigation partners whilst she was on maternity leave, particularly with commercial and some family matters and child welfare law.
In 1992, the partnership dissolved and Debbie went into a new Partnership with the Property Partner trading under the name of Roger Berwick Solicitors at Nottingham Place London W1.
In 1996, Debbie’s partner Mr Berwick, became a non-practising consultant and she became a sole practitioner trading from Gilbert Street London W1, but still under the name of Roger Berwick Solicitors.
In November 2000, Mr Berwick retired, and it was decided to change the name of the firm to reflect this. Our office lease in London expired in February 2001, and the firm relocated to Waltham Abbey (where Debbie has lived for many years) where we have remained since April 2001. The reason for the move was to cut down wasted travelling time, so that more time and energy could be put into the firm’s business.
In January 2000 Leonie Adams started working for Roger Berwick Solicitors as a Legal Secretary.
In September of that year Leonie started a course with the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and fully qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives in May 2007.
In October 2011 a partnership between Debbie and Leonie was formed.
Debbie and Leonie have worked closely together for many years now, and are constantly familiar with the work being undertaken by the other and so able to assist any client at all times and whatever the nature of their business with the firm.
As the company is a small partnership, we concentrate on Property matters, Commercial and Residential, Landlord & Tenant and Wills and Probate matters only.
We will occasionally carry out litigation when connected to property issues only, save in respect of long-standing regular clients, and then only on the basis that a specialist barrister is on hand throughout.
We also have a “Head of Security” of the four -legged canine variety, called Bloo, who attends work most days, and chats a lot (when not snoring or chewing everything not nailed down).
We aim to be friendly and efficient, and to ensure that our clients are kept fully informed about their business and transactions, and that full and detailed reports have been provided and considered before any decision to proceed is taken.
